Tunisia: Officials Investigated Despite Sporting Sanctions Being Lifted

by | May 15, 2024 | Legal, Social, Tunisia

Summary:

On 15 May 2024, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) lifted sanctions on Tunisia’s national sporting federation, removing the country from its list of non-compliant national bodies.

The decision was back-dated to 8 May 2024 based on information that WADA had received indicating that Tunisia’s national sporting body had implemented the required reforms officially on 2 May 2024.

Despite efforts toward compliance, WADA sanctions were not officially lifted prior to a 10 May swim meet at which organizers covered the Tunisian flag in order to comply with WADA’s decree.

The covering of the Tunisian flag led to an in-person visit by President Kais Saied at which he insisted the flag be uncovered. In the following days, numerous officials from Tunisia’s sporting bodies were arrested or questioned about the event.

Outlook:

While a victory for Tunisia’s sporting community, some of whom are looking ahead to participation in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the detention of sporting officials raises concerns about the state of Tunisia’s judicial system.

Some commentators have noted how slowly Tunisia’s national sporting body responded to WADA requirements, perhaps failing to effectively communicate with WADA. However, the legal cases against sporting officials create poor optics for the current administration. Coinciding with cases against civil society leaders and lawyers, the cases point to further politicization of the judiciary.
