Among those arrested were Ennahdha Secretary General, Ajmi Ourimi, and Yadh Loumi the former MP from Qalb Tounes.

Opposition presidential candidate Lotfi Mraihi was sentenced to eight months in prison and barred from running in future elections. Mraihi was considered of the stronger potential challengers to President Kais Saied in the upcoming presidential elections.

Outlook:

Arrest of various opposition political figures is likely to continue and, therefore, will continue attract attention from international media and human rights organizations. With the presidential elections rapidly approaching in October, particular attention will be paid to instances of legal action that prevent potential candidates or party leaders from challenging the president.

As major western media outlets, including the Associated Press and Bloomberg, continue to highlight arrests of opposition political figures, skepticism toward Tunisia’s ability to hold free and transparent elections will grow.

While President Saied’s administration is seeking to attract foreign investments in important and emerging sectors, including green energy, the political conditions in Tunisia raised the perceived levels of instability and risk within the country.

Concerns over political freedom in Tunisia amongst western partners is also impacting multinational cooperation on issue like illegal migration as this cooperation is being questioned after alleged human rights abuses from Tunisian authorities.
