by | Nov 5, 2025 | Economic, Libya

Summary:

On 4 November 2025, Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced a new oil and gas discovery in the western Ghadames Basin, marking a positive development for the country’s re-emerging energy sector.

The discovery was made by NOC subsidiary Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO), at well H1-NC4, located within the Ghadames sedimentary basin, an area that extends into both Tunisia and Algeria. According to the corporation’s statement, the well-estimated output is around 4,675 barrels of crude per day and approximately two million cubic feet of natural gas.

The NOC, which manages Libya’s oil and gas operations nationwide, emphasized that the discovery highlights the continued potential of the Ghadames Basin, one of the country’s underexplored hydrocarbon zones.

Outlook:

The new Ghadames discovery is another step toward the NOC’s ambition to raise national output to 2–3 million barrels per day and highlights growing momentum in Libya’s energy sector. It holds the potential to help Libya attract additional foreign investment and strengthen the country’s role as a reliable supplier to European markets seeking diversified energy sources.

Notably, this is the second discovery announced within a week, following Austria’s OMV find in the Sirte Basin, signaling renewed confidence in Libya’s exploration prospects.

However, political divisions and security instability remain key challenges that could hinder the full realization of these opportunities.
