Summary:

On 16 September 2026, Mauritania’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum signed an agreement with renewable energy developer CWP Global to develop the Aman Green Hydrogen Project. The agreement establishes a long-term contractual framework for the project’s subsequent phases and sets out its financial, economic and development arrangements.  

The project is expected to produce around 1.2 million tons of green hydrogen and 6.6 million tons of green ammonia annually, while supporting fertilizer production and the supply of clean fuels. It is also intended to support green steel production and the further processing of locally produced iron ore. 

Outlook: 

The agreement is likely to reinforce Mauritania’s growing position in the green hydrogen sector, particularly as demand for lower-carbon energy and industrial inputs expands internationally.  

The scale of the Aman project also adds strategic value to Mauritania’s iron ore sector by creating scope for green steel production and greater local processing rather than relying primarily on raw mineral exports. 

This could further strengthen Mauritania’s appeal to international energy and industrial companies seeking to develop large-scale renewable energy and mineral processing projects in West Africa.
