These deaths and injuries were the result of a total of 400 reported road accidents over the month of Ramadan.

On the night of 9 April alone, one accident in Kasserine killed 10 people, while another in Sidi Bouzid left eight people dead.

Due to low rates of seatbelt use, traffic accidents in Tunisia can have a particularly high rate of deaths and injuries.

Outlook:

Driving and riding in vehicles remains one of the riskiest activities in Tunisia.

Insufficient and degraded infrastructure, low seatbelt use rates, and aggressive driving make Tunisia’s roads among the most dangerous places to be in the country.

The month of Ramadan brings with it particular challenges for drivers, including the impacts of the Islamic practice of fasting which can result in physical impediments to safe driving such as exhaustion and dizziness. Also, this festive season involves significant additional travel and the early closure of offices, disrupting typical traffic flows throughout the country.

The use of seatbelts and particular caution while driving are essential in Tunisia to ensure the minimization of risk on the road.
