Ghrieb’s appointment to the PM role comes after his predecessor, Nadir Larbaoui, was dismissed without fanfare in late August. Ghrieb holds a doctorate and has previously held senior positions in Algerian industry, including at Algerian-Qatari Steel.
Ghrieb has indicated that the new government will focus on national economic recovery.
While the Algerian government has remained quiet during the governmental transition, rumors of dissent and intrigue amongst Algeria’s ruling elite have swirled. Nacer el Djinn, the countries former internal intelligence chief, is rumored to have fled the country with a group of loyal officers, creating additional questions about internal stability in the Algerian government.
Outlook:
As Algeria looks to form a new government, concerns remain about stability within the country’s ruling class which has shown signs of fracturing which are atypical for Algerian politics typically marked by dutiful, if compelled, compliance.
The new government faces a number of uphill battles, including a broad need for economic modernization and diversification alongside diplomatic conflicts with both Morocco and France. As Morocco continues to secure support for its claims in Western Sahara, Algeria looks increasingly frustrated in its long-standing support for the Polisario Front. Meanwhile, Algiers continues to trade diplomatic blows with Paris as relations remain strained.
These issues are active barriers to Algeria pursuing diplomatic and economic renewal, both of which will be necessary for the country to effectively navigate the evolving global economy and shifts in the security environment.
