Tunisia: Tunisair in Crosshairs of Pre-Election Anti-Corruption Campaign

by | Apr 1, 2024 | Economic, Political, Tunisia

Summary:

On 1 April 2024, President Kais Saied conducted an unannounced review of Tunisair operations at Tunis-Carthage International Airport, decrying the corruption and inefficiency that have long-plagued the nationalized carrier.

The President highlighted general concerns about corruption, but raised specific concerns regarding what he described as the illegal sale of a Tunisair aircraft that is now reportedly in Florida. The President also clarified that the carrier would not be sold despite ongoing financial challenges that have plagued the state firm for years.

On 5 April, following the President’s appearance, a court spokesman in Tunis announced that arrest warrants had been issued for three employees of Tunisair as well as for a fourth individual. The warrants were issued in connection with a corruption investigation involving the alleged issuance of falsified educational documents to Tunisair employees.

Outlook:

President Saied has continued to make high-visibility stops at Tunisia’s state-run service providers, likely as a means of continuing to posture himself as a popular ally of the Tunisian people in the face of public corruption.

Prior visits to a state-run steel firm and several public transport hubs portended legal cases and dismissals as the President looks to make tangible his promises to root out corruption.

With elections looming in late 2024, such activities are likely to continue in an attempt to bolster public support for the President in his re-election bid.
