Tunisia: Weekend Arrests of Media Commentators in Tense Political Climate

by | May 11, 2024 | Legal, Political, Social, Tunisia

Summary:

On Saturday, 11 May 2024, lawyer and media commentator Sonia Dahmani was arrested in a widely publicized police operation that was captured on video, for sarcastic comments critical of the current state of Tunisia.

Dahmani’s comments reportedly pertained to the poor state of Tunisia given the large number of young people that desire to leave the country.

At a similar time, media commentators Borhen Bssais and Mourad Zeghidi were detained on 48-hour detention warrants under the controversial Article 54, which prohibits the propagation of “fake news” on media and social media platforms.

Criticism has grown from both domestic and international voices that President Kais Saied’s administration is working to silence critical and opposition voices as the country moves toward presidential elections in late 2024.

Outlook:

As Tunisia moves toward an important election in late 2024 during which President Saied will be looking to validate his popular mandate via re-election, his administration remains highly sensitized to political commentators and journalists who are critical of the current political and economic climate.

With laws in place with which legal action can be taken to silence such voices, the administration risks overplaying its political hand and galvanizing the opposition movement that has otherwise remained fractured, unorganized, and unable to connect with a broad base of Tunisian voters. Young voters in particular are fed up with politics and general and have yet to be mobilized to support an opposition candidate or party.
